What is dry ice blasting?

Dry ice blasting is a revolutionary new cleaning technique that uses dry ice pellets
(COz in solid form), which are accelerated in a pressurised air stream to impact the surface that needs to be cleaned. This process is similar to sand blasting, bead blasting or soda blasting, but dry ice blasting has many more advantages.
Dry ice blasting is very environmentally-friendly, and is a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods of cleaning industrial production equipment.

The cleaning effect of dry ice blasting, is based on 3 principles:

Kinetic- When dry ice pellets are accelerated in a jet of compressed air at the speed of sound, they crack and loosen the coating on the surface being treated.
Thermal- The low temperature of dry ice pellets (-79 degrees Celsius) makes the coating brittle, cracks it and loosens it. This allows the dry ice to permeate the coating.
Sublimation- Dry ice penetrates the coating and immediately sublimes (passes directly from a solid to a vapour state). This results in a 700fold increase in volume, an explosive effect that lifts the coating off the surface.

How does dry ice blasting work?

  • Dry ice pellets are filled into the tank
  • Dry ice pellets are propelled by the airflow through the blasting nose
  • The blasting gun removes the coating
